I freakin' love SNL. I don't know how in the world they manage to be so funny.

Here's a pretty good video of a sketch I saw once. It's Penelope in traffic school.
This is a true story.

Tonight at about 9:30 I drove to the school to practice (you WISH you were as cool as me). There was a small backup at the light to cross Tennessee, so I ended up just missing the light. A few seconds after I pulled up to wait for a green light, I noticed a guy in the car next to me leaning out the window and staring at me dreamily.
He motioned for me to open my window, but my window wasn't working at the moment. I tried to tell him through gestures. I think he understood me, and we both shrugged, but he KEPT STARING AT ME. The Tennessee light is an extremely long wait, so it got to be very awkward very quickly. I tried my window again. It opened. Success!
"I just wanted to tell you that you are beautiful." I couldn't decide whether he was drunk or not. He didn't sound drunk, but he was acting the part.
"...okay," I responded.
"No really...you are so beautiful." His friend in the driver's seat laughed. "He's drunk," he said. Seeing as the guy still hadn't stopped staring at me like he'd never seen a woman before, I had to believe it was true.
"No, this isn't me being drunk or anything. I swear, you are really just beautiful. So whatever party you're going to tonight, I want you to go knowing that you are beautiful." I thought that line was very sweet, even coming from an intoxicated stranger.
"Thank you."
"So where's your boyfriend?" I smile and tell him I don't have one.
"I bet he's a great guy," he responds. The driver laughs again.
"Man, you are so beautiful," he says again. Finally (finally! I think) the light turns green and he wished me a good night as we drive our seperate ways.

Did that really just happen? I asked myself as I pulled into the college of music.

Moral of the story:
On a game day in Tallahassee, you never know quite what you're going to get.
I'm having a hard time staying away from competitions this year. They're so enticing, I'm like a moth to the flame...but college auditions are more important, and I want as little extra work/stress as possible next semester. I must stay away.

But I want to compeeeete...

I made it onto the sub list of the NW Florida Symphony. My first victory!...or something.
I have seen a lot of tv shows/movies lately which contain a similar scene. A man and a woman (not a couple, just two friends or acquaintances) will be talking, and suddenly one of them grabs the other and kisses them. Just out of the blue.

I don't think that happens in real life

(...but sometimes I think about what I would do if it did).
I keep forgetting exactly when my classes are. It's bad.

Monday, September 08, 2008

My Mondays are CRAZY! It's a good thing I live so close to school.

Sunday, September 07, 2008

My friend Daniel made a beautiful pictoral interpretation of something I have to tell people at least once a week:

The new facebook?
Two thumbs DOWN.

Thursday, September 04, 2008

You guys cannot possibly imagine what a difference it makes not having to carry around heavy books. ESPECIALLY THE NORTON SCORES.

I am weak, and I walk to school, and heavy books make me sad, very sad. But this semester...there are no heavy books to bring to school. My load is light. And I really appreciate that now.

P.S. I know how to roundhouse kick.

Dragonite, hyper beam NOW!!

Tuesday, September 02, 2008

If you're buying a bike lock, and there is only one left on the shelf and it looks like it's in perfect condition...there's probably a reason that it's the only one left.

Edit: There's also a reason why the cheap deodorant is cheaper than the rest....
(Sorry, aural skills class. Don't judge me because I smell. You would smell too if you were me.)
Things are getting crazy.

I'm trying

to break through.

Saturday, August 30, 2008

Truly, the only fulfillment to be had in this life is in Jesus Christ.

You know I believe it.

Thursday, August 28, 2008

I could swear the days are longer here. The 24 hours just seem so much more full. I think time moves slower in Tallahassee, that's what it is.

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

I'm watching the Yankees game tonight. Derek, Mo, Bobby, A-Rod, Robbie...these are my boys.

The baseball season lasts from April until September. 6 months, it takes 6 months to decide whether a team is in the playoffs or not. And each game is more than 3 hours long. It's about consistancy--one bad game will not hurt you as long as you are consistant.

I have to admit...I envy the 6-month season, where consistancy is the most important factor in success.

I took an audition yesterday, it couldn't have lasted longer than 6 minutes. And those 6 minutes will determine my ensemble placement for the entire semester. The string players have it worse--their 6 minutes determine their placement for the entire YEAR! If you have a bad day...too bad. No chance to do it over again. There's no next game, there's no we will win tomorrow to make up for today's loss. It seems unfair, in a way.

I get nervous. I get nervous at every performance, every audition, every scale I play in studio class. And I play badly. It's not fair. I want the 6-month season to determine whether I not I get to play in the postseason. 6 minutes is not enough.

[whine]
I can feel it already--this semester is going to be SWEET. Only 6 credits worth of "real" class, and then two lessons, two ensembles, and two athletic classes. Ha! Beat that.

NO ANYTHING BUT THAT

They asked Prokofiev.

You have to wonder what this world is coming to when you're asking college freshman to play Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, the second hardest excerpt ever (at least in my estimation).

Hahah! It's kind of funny lately. As soon as I wish for something not to happen, it happens. Ah well.
I really, really don't like getting rained on.

I hope they don't ask for Prokofiev. Nobody in the studio wants them to ask that. Okay, maybe one person. But it's not me.

Monday, August 25, 2008

First day of school was today.
That's all I have to say about that.

Sunday, August 24, 2008

School starts tomorrow.
Yikes.

Saturday, August 23, 2008

It's raining a lot here.
I don't mind...yet.
But if school starts and it's still raining like this...
Fay is getting punched.
In the eye.
I don't ever really know what's going on anymore.

Friday, August 22, 2008

I have read a lot about Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in the last 48 hours.

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

And when the time to leave was near:
"Ah!" the fox said. "I shall weep."
"It's your own fault," the little prince said. "I never wanted to do you any harm, but you insisted that I tame you..."
"Yes, of course," the fox said.
"But you're going to weep!" said the little prince.
"Yes, of course," the fox said.
"Then you get nothing out of it?"
"I get something," the fox said, "because of the color of wheat."

Monday, August 18, 2008

I don't know why my blog keeps going back to July 25.
I am so mad for Nastia. The uneven bar finals, she ties for first, and she gets the silver...what the heck??

I agree.

Sunday, August 17, 2008

So this is it. The last night here at home. I can't say that I'm unhappy about leaving. I would not wish this summer to go on any longer than it has. Regrets...

There's ever the bittersweet parting, though, never quite knowing when I will see my friends again. I hope you guys know that I love you and I am going to miss everthing I have found here. I find comfort in knowing that this is not the end...

It's been one to remember.

Tonight is going to be awesome. I am excited to the limit.

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Half of the ring lies here with me
The other half's in the bottom of the sea

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Oh my...what a night for my favorite sports. It isn't official yet as I write this, but they're pretty sure that my US women's Olympic gymnastics team came in second place. And all because of one person, who brought the team down by 1.6 points. Dang! The worst part is that she was an alternate for another girl who had an injury and couldn't compete. And then there's the fact that China won the gold with an illegal team. All Olympic athletes are supposed to be at least 16 years old. I swear that some of their girls didn't look a day over 12. Seriously.

But at least we still have the individual event finals and the all-around, which I am convinced that Shawn Johnson will dominate. She is SOLID! My mom calls her the "little peanut" and for some reason it seems to fit. She 4'9" and 16 years old-- I don't get it.

In other news, Michael Phelps won lots of gold medals. Yaaaaaaay.

The red sox won to the texas rangers today...19-16. What? The Yankees won in the 12th inning.

Fun day at the beach. When you're in the water and it starts to rain, you may not even notice it.

Monday, August 11, 2008

I'm back...
yup.

And thus begins the finale to a spectacularly joyful, enlightening, and convoluted summer. Hit me with your best shot, Life. I've got help.

(P.S. Right now I just happen to be listening to "Stiff Upper Lip" from Crazy for You..."sober or blotto, this is our motto/keep muddling through"...gotta love the Brits.)
So...the last few days of the convention were pretty spectacular. The concerto night that I talked about was so great! The Rodrigo was absolutely beautiful, the Liebermann was so much cooler than I ever remember, and I heard a rad new concerto by Anthony Ritchie. I hope maybe to play that one for the concerto competition next year, if somebody lets me...

The last concert of the convention was my favorite part of the whole thing. I heard this guy play with his group called Project. Yes, you SHOULD be jealous that I got to see him live. It was SO COOL! I can't even describe to you how this group performs. All I can say is that I was smiling...even laughing...the entire performance. I would pay a lot of money to see them again.

My lesson with Walfrid Kujala was very good. He knows everything, pretty much, and has a calm, sensible demeanor that makes for very good teaching. Northwestern is on the grad school map, folks!

I have learned a lot from all these lessons, and one conclusion that I came to is that I need to get out of Florida for grad school. I'm sorry, but I am no longer considering FSU for grad school anymore. I think I could still learn a lot from Prof. Amsler, but I need a new perspective. It's hard to explain why I feel this way, but it's something that I feel in my gut that I need to do. So I'm sorry, but it's out-of-state or bust.

This might change, but as of right now, this is my grad school list:

Rice (Buyse)
Northwestern (Kujala)
U of Texas at Austin (Gedigian)
Arizona State (Buck)
Louisiana State (Kemler)

I am very happy because I feel I have accomplished what I set out to do this summer, which is to decide where I am applying and meet all of the teachers. All five of those teachers know my name and face and have a good idea of my playing ability, and that is so important!! Good job, me.
Home.
Hungry.

Saturday, August 09, 2008

We had to pay 18 dollars for four days of Internet...it could get worse, I suppose.

Things are going well here. I had a lesson with Leone Buyse from Rice and it's still probably my top choice. The next day I had a lesson with Katherine Kemler from LSU and it was good...I'm pretty sure I am still going to audition there. She bought me breakfast and gave me a free CD for turning pages at her recital...sweet.

On Sunday I am getting a lesson from Walfred Kujala (Northwestern). My experiences here have convinced me to audition at Northwestern instead of Michigan. I didn't expect my choices to change but I suppose I should have expected it given my opinionated and extrememly well-connected former teacher.

I have learned a lot about what makes a good teacher from all these lessons. To me, there are two important aspects of a teacher: style and content. Some teachers will inspire you with an amazing teaching style..this is what makes you leave lessons with that uplifted feeling. But that doesn't mean much unless you have knowledge enough to have the right CONTENT in the lesson...this is what actually makes you play better. And the best teachers have both.

I have seen some nice playing and some amazing playing here. My favorite performances so far were a performance of La Montaine's piccolo sonata by Alyce Johnson and everything that Amy Porter played. I have decided that Amy Porter can do anything. She's invincible.

Tonight is concerto night! It's always the best gala concert. The first two pieces on the program are Rodrigo's Fantasia para un gentilhommbre, a special piece close to my heart, and Liebermann's piccolo concerto, a tour de force concerto--so exciting! It's gonna be great.

That's it for my update right now, I'm sure I'll have more to say after two more days. These are long days, by the way, with flute stuff starting at 8 am and ending at 10 pm. It's tiring! I'm kind of glad that it only lasts four days, I don't know if I could take it if it was much longer.

Ahhhh

I am excited about Kansas City and about focusing on the future of my career...and other aspects of the trip.

I got a 1280 on the GRE. I don't even know if that is good. Is that good?
That test totally and completely fried my brain. By the final section (which was math), if I couldn't find an answer soon enough, I just started guessing. I hope that was the section that didn't count.

...stupid test.

:)

Tonight...I am going on a date.

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Strange phone call today...Katherine Kemler called because she wants a page turner for her recital at NFA. ?? I said I could do it. Obviously.

I attempted to take a practice GRE today and I couldn't get throught the third section. Too much thinking!! That's like four straight hours of testing. BOOOO. I really don't want to take that test...Ah well, come Saturday night, it'll be over.

Ultimate today better not get rained out.

Wednesday, July 30, 2008

I skipped lunch today and I am hungry.

When you think about it, though, feeling hungry is actually a good thing to feel. It means you're healthy. When you're sick, you lose your appetite. When you're terribly nervous, you can't eat. So to feel hungry means you are neither sick nor terribly nervous. And that is a comforting thought, isn't it?

REPOST!!!
Sept. 17, 2005:

So last night, a bunch of people were in my/Sarah's room playing a game, and some of the boys found my slinky and decided to experiment with it. (Experiment meaning stretching it the length of the hall and letting one end go so it shoots in the other direction.) Needless to say, my slinky broke. So one of the guys said he'd buy me a new one. I was like, "okay whatever."

So today, I'm in my dorm room, and the guy comes by with the slinky. He pulls it out and says "This one was plastic, so I got this one too," he pulls out a metal slinky "Which was smaller then the one you had" he pulls out a tiny metal slinky "so I got this one just for fun."I now have three slinkies whcih can fit into each other. The baby one is so cute.

I'd like to use this incident as a metaphor to life. Sometimes bad things happen (some boys break your slinky) and you don't see how anything good could possibly come of it. But there is a reason for everything: God will provide, and you will always end up with three slinkies in the end.
SELF-DESTRUCTION
With a wink to May 25, 2008 and the more disciplined person I was and still could be.

p.s. Bad decisions are worse than good decisions.
Universal was fun for the whole family (or at least most of it).
We got wet.
Then we got dry.
Then we got wet again.

I'm not feelin' so good today.

I just played the entire Mendelssohn's Scherzo excerpt slurred without taking any extra breaths at quarter note=84. I just wanted to throw that out there.

Why did I listen to that CD? That was a bad idea.

Those greeks had it right. Music has power that we don't understand.

Liz Buck was CRAZY, ENERGETIC, BRILLIANT, EFFECTIVE and ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYERS I HAVE EVER HEARD UP CLOSE!!!

She exceeded all of my expectations, and I am SO auditining to ASU. It was a wonderful trip (despite getting in at 2 am last night).

Time for Ultimate!

P.S. I signed up to take ultimate as a class at FSU...that makes me cooler than you.

Friday, July 18, 2008

I'm going to Brevard to get a lesson from Dr. Liz from Arizona State. I know it doesn't make any sense. But I'll be back on Sunday. Hopefully.

From Brevard to Brevard and back to Brevard, that's what this trip is.

Monday, July 14, 2008

New developments that I am not going to tell you about are making me happy!

Last week both of my Ultimate teams lost horribly. This week, both of my teams won by a lot. I like winning better than losing.

Another lock-in last night (and this morning). Stayed up later than ever before. 24 hours straight till 8:10 AM. When I am that tired, I lose a lot of inhibitions. I think it's like being drunk, I wouldn't know. It's fun until I realize that I am acting incredibly stupid.

Love is a battlefield.
Thanks, Pat Benatar.

Happy birthday, Carl Orff!

I heard an hour of his ingenuous and sonorous music today. I never knew his music was so limpid. Check it out. Schulmusik. Awesome.

In these semi-diurnal posts between now and GRE time, I am going to attempt to use one or more vocabulary word in each post. I exhort you to look these words up if they seem abtruse, and I apologize if I may become garrulous or bombastic occasionally. I can only prognosticate that this ancillary practice will bolster my burgeoning knowledge of the English language.

Yesterday was pretty much the best day ever. Beach, Yanks oust Boston, and the first ever T-ville GIRLS NIGHT!

The beach is amazing at low tide. It leaves this very shallow film of water in front of the ocean, and the beach is about twice as big. That's when they must take all of those postcard pictures. It's beautiful. I didn't want to leave. My mild sunburn is proof.

In other news...
I have been cured of the practice plague, where I feel guilty whenever I don't practice. I have been set free.

God, family, friends, flute.

My computer is up and running once again! Wee!

Write and delete, that's all I do on here. So much self-censoring.

My dad made a mix CD of oldies love songs. I have been listening to it constantly and I have to admit that for as hard a heart as I have, some of those songs are very sweet. I guess it's the music that makes the difference.

Bee Gees:
You don't know what it's like
Baby, you don't know what it's like
To love somebody
To love somebody
The way I love you

Badfinger:
Looking out from my lonely room
Day after day
Bring it home, baby make it soon
I give my love
To you

Posting from the PSJ public library right now. I was using our computer yesterday when the lightning struck, and our internet hasn't been working right ever since.

I hope we get it fixed today because I really need to keep open the lines of communication with these grad school teachers and I need to sign up for the GRE some day.

It was a crazy day at work, complete with the Titusville police and a security breach. Woah!

So much more to write but I hate surfing the net in these public places.

Someone keeps farting.

You know you love playing a sport if when you feel like you are about to have a heart attack, when every inch of your body is telling you to stop, when you feel like you can barely walk, you somehow still find yourself saying, "there's still light out...we can play for a while longer."

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Mr. Moyse told our flute class at his chalet in Brattleboro the following story.

"I had an Italian houseguest who spoke no French. I spoke no Italian.

'Early one morning, we took a car to a scenic spot in the Jura Mountains to watch the sunrise.

'We were overcome by the beauty of the moment. Spontaneously, the Italian shouted, "CRESCENDO!"
I heard a John Williams medley today. Man, I wish that he had done all of the Harry Potter movies. They could have been so much more awesome.

It's hard to believe sometimes that certain pieces haven't always existed. There was a point when some of our parents were alive and West Side Story hadn't been writtten yet. Can you imagine? And the Olympic theme was written at one time, but it's such a standard now that I can't believe that there was any point in time when the Olympics existed and the theme didn't.

Unrelated...

Whenever it rains here and I have nowhere to go, I feel like I have somehow beaten nature. I think to myself, "hahaha! I don't have to walk out in the rain." And life is good.

Monday, June 23, 2008

I am back from Buffalo, and I can honestly say that the trip was one of the best trips I have ever taken. There was a part of me that was longing, just longing, to reconnect with the northern branch of the Stahls, and now I have finally done it

Of course, the reason I came was to get a lesson from Bonnie Boyd at Eastman. I had the lesson, and it was pretty good. I could see her as a potential grad school teacher. The only catch is that she doesn't have any grad openings for next year. D'oh! I would say that I wish she had told me that before I spent $200 on a plane ticket, but I had such a good time on this trip that it doesn't matter. Sometimes God works in ways we cannot understand, but I believe that sometimes He works in ways that we can understand. I needed a reason to come and meet my family again after all of these years, and the lesson served that purpose.

So, as it turns out, the lesson was the least significant part of my trip.

Definitely my favorite part of the trip was going to my cousin Kerry's house. She lives on the top of a mountain, in the middle of nowhere, and she owns so much land that you wouldn't believe it if you saw it for yourself. I have never seen a house with such a beautiful view in my life. It's so peaceful there, with wide open spaces, it just gave me this feeling of calm that I haven't had since childhood. Traveling around her muddy woods and farmland in the vehicle she calls "the mule" gave me a feeling that I was one with nature. It sounds crazy and cliche, but it's true.

She has two adorable kids, Elizabeth who is five, and Gabe who is about 1 (I think). They were both awesome kids, and I loved playing with them.

It takes a long time to drive from Buffalo to Rochester to the top of a moutain and back to Buffalo, so I spent a good portion of my first day talking with my aunt Karlene, who got to tell me about everything related to my New York brethren.

That night I went to the local relay for life, which I only mention because there were a bunch of raffles there, and my cousin TJ ended up winning the raffle called "wheelbarrow of booze." He paid $5 for about $500 worth of alcohol and a wheelbarrow to boot.

The next day was also awesome, and the highlight was getting to meet my cousin TJ's baby Avery. I freaking love that little girl! She was so precious and happy all the time, I couldn't stop watching her. I can imagine that if I got so attached to her that much in the short amount of time I was there, how attached parents must be...

I caught up with my two cousins, who have both married within the last couple years or so, and their wives. They sure have changed a lot since I lived in New York, and it was truly wonderful to see how things have turned out. We went out to lunch at my favorite restaurant of all time, Chefs (you know you're jealous) and then hung out at my cousin Jeff's ultra-awesome house until I had to leave that day.

All in all, it was a great trip and the Eastman thing didn't bother me one bit. I didn't know how much I needed that trip until I made it. Going back to my true roots always awakens so many memories, happy childhood memories, for me. The deer head when you first walk in, the moat we always tried to jump over, JoJo's, the accent that everybody has and denies, birthdays with my cousins, the list could go on. It was one to remember.
I have PICTURES!

All of the Stahl babies end up with blond hair and blue eyes. I seem to have missed the bill on that one.
Here's little Gabe, the newest member of the clan.

Dear Elizabeth, the happiest and craftiest girl I know.

And we certainly can't forget about Avery, the most precious little girl EVER.

BEST TRIP EVER
EXHAUSTED
MORE LATER

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Well, I am-a ready to go to the New York. Wish me a safe and turbulance-free flight, especially since I have a slight history of motion sickness and it is expected to rain in Buffalo tonight. :o

Yesterday at work, one of the really funny ladies in the office became a naturalized US citizen. We had a natualization celebration for her. It was great. Today after I had been bored at work for about an hour, she poked her head into my office with a grin on her face and yelled "GOOD MORNING!" and then ran away before I had a chance to react.

It's things like that that make me actually like my job.

Also, today Dave Glerum played both Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin and Ravel's Piano Concerto. Two jazzy piano concertos in one day? Heck yes.

I might have computer access there, and I may not. So signing off for now, hope I come home in one piece (and not frozen!).

I'm-a flyin to Buffalo/Rochester this weekend to visit some family and get a lesson with Bonnie Boyd from Eastman. I am quite excited. It's a whole different world up there. And with any luck, I might just make it to Chefs...

I am probably going to make a road trip to NC sometime in July to have a lesson with Dr. Buck from Arizona State (she teaches at Brevard). I started thinking about what we would talk about, and I imagined her asking me why I didn't go to Brevard. Then I got mad about Brevard all over again.

In other news, I am fairly certain that Joe Girardi is psychic.

It's raining really hard and I do NOT have to walk in it.

Tallastupid.

---------------------------------

So one of the lyrics in a VW song are as follows:

How am I supposed to pretend
I never want to see you again

which I find very clever. It can be taken two different ways. There is obviously no punctuation in music, so it can either mean "How am I supposed to pretend [that] I never want to see you again?" or the slightly meaner "How am I supposed to pretend? I never want to see you again."

Those guys.

I just love the twinkle, the excited look in rookies' eyes when they play. The look that tells stories of how hard they have worked, and the wonder that they have finally made it, living the dream in the majors.

Melky had it, Pedroia had it...someday I'll have it.

SIBELIUS SYMPHONY NO. 2 ROCKS MY WORLD.

Monday, June 09, 2008

The problem here is that I enjoy life a bit too much. There are many activities I would like to do every day. Since I never have enough time to do all of these activities, I am always dissapointed that something had to be sacrificed. Thus, while I feel like I have wasted the day every single day, I really did the best I could to compromise.

God, family, friends, flute. That's my newest order.

Dreams aren't worth anything if you don't enjoy life in the process of achieving them.
The alphabet and I are very well-aquainted...I mean, well-acquainted.

A great sermon...Yankees win...FSU wins by a landslide (we're in the world series, yo!!!)...enough practice time...a good game of Ultimate (my team didn't win, but I did manage to make some plays)...watching the clouds pass the stars...and games with the gang.

That's what makes a good...nay, great...day.

Do you guys ever fear that maybe your friends don't enjoy your company after all? I believe we are all a lot more insecure than we must appear on the outside.

This has been one of those weeks that is so good that I spontaneously dance around my room in bursts of joy. Nothing special going on, I just love this here life I have been given. And Vampire Weekend.

What is wrong with these news headlines?

I simply cannot stop listening to Vampire Weekend!!! They're my new favorite band, I am in love with every song I have heard. Even the ones with cursing, though I wish they wouldn't do that.

Have a listen

In case anyone is wondering about my life right now (hahahahah!!!), I will post later (hahahahaha!!!). Good joke, me.

At one point someone told us "you two were made for each other," and at the moment I really believed it to be true.

I am such a hypocrite.
YOU ARE SUCH A HYPOCRITE.

(get it?)

PS Ultimate rocks my socks. I am going to be sore until I play again next week, and that's the way it should be.

PPS Go to the PostSecret exhibit at the Brevard art museum. It appeals to all kinds of humans. You'll like it.
